Residents of Warazup village in Hpakant Township, Kachin State, have fled their homes as fierce clashes continue between the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and the Min Zay Thant militia, alongside airstrikes by the State Administration Council (SAC).
According to a local resident, fighting has escalated in the area, forcing villagers to seek safer locations. The displacement began in early March, and now almost all of Warazup’s residents have left.
“The militia entered the village in about five vehicles, looted empty houses, and set many on fire. Some homes were spared, while others with remaining residents were searched before they were released. Now, the village is completely deserted,” a local source reported.
The Min Zay Thant militia ramped up its military activities in Warazup since early February, resulting in heavy clashes with the KIA and airstrikes from SAC forces.
On February 17, an SAC airstrike killed one civilian and destroyed two houses. A second airstrike was carried out on March 14 over Nam Sai village, near Warazup, despite the absence of ongoing clashes. This attack further prompted residents to flee in search of safety.
