Chinese security forces, including police and military personnel, have increased their presence at trade gates along the Kachin-China border, according to local residents.
“The deployment started on March 16. They are stationed at the border gates on the Chinese side due to upcoming changes in border trade regulations,” a local source reported.
Some residents believe the heightened security is a response to the rise in smuggling activities from Myanmar into China and adjustments in Chinese border laws.
Since March 16, Chinese police and soldiers have been stationed at border checkpoints, restricting trade activities. The closure of official trade gates, including the Mai Ja Yang gate, has led to an increase in smuggling as legal trade remains halted.
“Right now, at Mai Ja Yang, goods are either smuggled across or transported through Muse. Smuggling activities have been increasing,” a resident added.
Currently, no goods are entering the Mai Ja Yang border trade zone officially. Instead, products coming from Muse are being sold at higher prices, and some are entering through illegal channels.
Locals remain uncertain about the exact nature of the upcoming changes to China’s border trade policies but continue to monitor the situation.
