A 19-year-old woman tragically drowned at a reservoir in Ten Mile Ywar Thit Village, Hpakant Township, on March 25 at 1:30 PM while taking photos near the water.

"We were already leaving the reservoir, but my friend wanted to take more pictures, so we went back. The area where the water flows was slippery with moss, and she lost her footing and fell in. She couldn’t swim, so she drowned," recounted a surviving friend.

The victim was from Nantsi Aung Myaing Thaya Village, Sagaing Region and had been at the reservoir with two friends when the accident occurred.

"I tried to rescue her along with another friend, but we both nearly drowned too. Since I can swim, I managed to get back to shore and call for help. The water was pulling us down, and some areas were extremely deep," the survivor added.

Authorities in Hpakant have launched an investigation to determine whether the death was accidental or if further legal action is required.

The young woman was reportedly engaged and set to be married in April. Last year, a man also drowned while attempting to swim across the same reservoir.

Local residents have urged authorities to put up warning signs as drowning incidents occur frequently at the site.
