There has been a recent escalation in the skirmishes between the Kachin Independence Army (KIA/KPDF) joint forces in Waingmaw Township, which has disrupted the transportation of goods to the Kanpaikti border checkpoint.

According to the Setmu ward, "The closure of the Loije road has diverted traffic to the Kanpaikti road, but the renewed skirmishes and increased checkpoints (approximately 15 between Waingnaw and Kanpaikti) have made this route unsafe and impractical.

The suspension of trade at the Loije border checkpoint and the challenges faced on the Kanpaikti road have resulted in significant losses for entrepreneurs engaged in tissue banana and other agricultural businesses.

As per the Ministry of Economy and Trade, the Kanpaikti border checkpoint facilitated trade worth 208 million dollars between April 2023 and March 2024.

Currently, cargo trucks are stranded in the Setmu ward and the field area of Sitapru ward in Myitkyina due to the aforementioned challenges.
