Despite the peak glacier climbing season marking the transition from winter to summer, the Putao Glacier region in Kachin State has seen an alarming decline in tourist arrivals this year, according to local guides.

"This year has been worse than before. Tourism has almost come to a halt. Even in 2024, when road access was restricted, we still had a decent number of visitors. But now, there are barely any," said a tourism operator.

Putao Glacier has long been a prime destination for adventurers, especially during late winter and early spring. However, the sharp drop in visitor numbers has severely impacted local guides who rely on tourism for their livelihood.

"Despite the political situation, air travel to Putao remains open, but ticket prices have become unreasonably high. That might be a major factor deterring tourists," a local resident noted.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic and military coup, the region was a bustling hub for both domestic and international travelers seeking ice-climbing experiences. Now, the landscape of tourism in Putao has drastically changed.

The most visited glaciers and snow-capped mountains in the area include Phung Yin, Phongkanrazi, Shan Khawng, and Khakabo Razi Glacier.
