As reported by the local residents, there are losing land areas in the Community Farming (CF) areas where locals from Hkang Bu Village and Mali Yang Village are operating their agribusiness, due to the gold mining activities by the gold industries’ entrepreneurs in the Nawng Hkying village group, Waingmaw Township, Kachin State.

According to a local resident from Mali Yang village, “If one of the land owners sell his 1 acre of land area, the rest of land owners have to sell their land areas even though they don’t want to sell. Because, although we don’t sell our land areas, the gold industries are going to do gold mining activities also in our land. So, we all sells our land areas with charges instead of losing our land areas without getting any charges. As a result, almost half of the Community Farming (CF) areas which own by the local residents are sold to the gold industries’ entrepreneurs.”

Despite the fact that the Community Farming (CF) areas are the places where the locals do farm and agribusiness, the land areas are destroyed due to the extensive gold mining activities by the gold industries entrepreneurs.

As said by the local residents, subsequent to the gold mining activities in the areas, the soil in the areas turn infertile, therefore, farming and agriculture activities are not able to carry out in the areas. In addition, it is also known that the locals are not allowed to do gold mining activities in the areas where the gold entrepreneurs have already bought.

It is noteworthy that between 100 and 200 estimate acre of Community Farming (CF) areas are the places where nearly 50 households of the locals from Mali Yang village and Hkang Bu Village do farming and agribusiness. Moreover, the gold industries’ entrepreneurs came to the village and launched gold mining activities since the beginning of 2023 and it is stated that the land areas were bought with the prices between 3,000,000 kyats and 4,000,000 kyats per acre by the gold entrepreneurs.
