As reported by local residents, more than 1,000 civilians from Putao Town and Sum Pyi Yang Village groups are fleeing to the jungle for safety and need emergency help.

“Currently, the Sum Pyi Yang residents have fled to scattered places in the forest. We have fled urgently and it has been more than two weeks, and we have not been able to gather yet. To stay in the forest for a long time, we require a lot of supplies. All the roads are closed, so it is not convenient to ask for help. Most of us have difficulties with basic food items, shelters, and medical supplies,” a Sum Pyi Yang resident said via phone.

The civilians of the Sum Pyi Yang village group, which is located between Putao Town and Sumpra Bum Town, evacuated to safety overnight due to news that the SAC column coming from Putao Town on May 12th had taken some residents of Wa Dat village as human shields.

It is reported that more than 1,000 Sum Pyi Yang residents, who have been evacuating to the jungle for almost two weeks, are in dire need of essential supplies, such as shelters, basic food, and medical supplies.

In addition, the SAC and militia joint forces burned down three residences on May 19, and a 60 year-old woman drowned in Nsai Hka Creek while escaping from SAC’s arrest.

Similarly, the SAC often arrests, interrogates, and beats civilians who return to the village to get food and essential items. Therefore, the civilians do not dare to return to the village and are trapped in the jungle.

Moreover, there are skirmishes between the SAC and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA/KPDF) and KPF joint forces in SumPiYang village, and the military situation between the armed forces remains intense.
