Residents of Myitkyina report that drug transactions and usage are occurring openly in the Rambu and Kyet Paun Gyan neighborhoods of Myitkyina, Kachin State. Furthermore, they indicate that discarded needles are being carelessly left on the streets without appropriate disposal measures.

“The police station has been informed of the situation. However, due to the lack of action, individuals continue to utilize the drugs in public spaces. They indiscriminately discard needles in various locations, and while some attempt to bury them, improper burial leads to their reemergence. The incidence of robberies and stabbings has significantly increased,” as stated by a resident of Myitkyina.

Drug users are openly using the drugs in public areas, with a noticeable increase in group activity among users during the evening hours, particularly around 8 p.m., while sporadic use is observed throughout the day, he stated.

According to the local, “the use of drugs is prevalent in public areas, particularly during the evening and nighttime hours, specifically between 7 and 8 o'clock. These substances are being consumed both on the streets and in the field as well.”

The individuals who use drugs are typically in their 20s and 30s, frequently discarding used needles in public areas. Residents have expressed that despite having reported this issue to the police station, no actions have been implemented, resulting in drug-related activities contributing to incidents of robbery and assault.

Residents report a rising number of drug users and dealers in every neighborhood of Myitkyina, noting that the number of individuals receiving methadone treatment at the drugs cessation hospital has also increased compared to previous times.
