Residents are expressing concern following violent confrontations between the State Administration Council (SAC) and the Kachin People's Defense Force (KPDF) in proximity to Myaing village, located within the Nyaung Kone village tract of Mohnyin township, Kachin State. Reports indicate that the SAC has been relentlessly shelling the area with heavy artillery throughout the night.

“After the skirmish broke out, approximately 50 soldiers and Shanni militiamen advanced through the bus station to bolster their forces. As soon as they began their ascent, the Nanma artillery commenced a relentless barrage using heavy weaponry. The heavy artillery fire persisted throughout the night, causing significant distress and preventing me from sleeping soundly, as I feared that the shells might strike my home," stated a resident of Htan Tabin village.

Following the outbreak of skirmishes near Mohnyin town last week, the SAC's Nanma artillery unit engaged in sustained heavy artillery fire throughout the night. Residents reported that the SAC obstructed access to Htan Tabin village after receiving intelligence regarding the movement of KPDFs through the area. The confrontation took place while the SAC was positioned in Myaing village, which allowed for the entry and exit of KPDFs, as noted by local inhabitants.

A local resident further reported that the SAC and the Shanni militia engage in unprovoked gunfire every night in Mohnyin. Additionally, they have heard from the SAC that conscription is set to take place after 7 p.m.

On January 12, an artillery shell detonated on a residence located on Main Road in Alawi Kone Ward, resulting in injuries to a three-year-old child and causing damage to the walls of the house.
