Internally displaced persons (IDPs) from the Phare region of Chipwi Township in Kachin State are making arrangements to return to their residences. However, the prolonged duration of their displacement has rendered their homes unsafe and in a state of disrepair. Furthermore, they are encountering numerous challenges in the process of renovating these properties.
“Due to the extremely cold weather in the region, the homes of the displaced individuals are increasingly deteriorating and becoming hazardous. The shelters are inadequate in providing protection against rain and wind. This situation is adversely impacting the health of the elderly,” stated a refugee from Phare.
The intention to resettle individuals following an extended duration of displacement is evident; however, numerous rehabilitation needs persist. The challenge of returning to their residences is compounded by insufficient food resources available during the rehabilitation phase.
The Phare region is characterized by a cold climate and heavy snowfall, resulting in challenging conditions for pedestrian transportation. The inhabitants primarily cultivate and consume upland potatoes, a sour fruit known as chinsaw kha thi, corn, and walnuts as their staple foods.
The Phare IDP camp is situated within the KIA 7th Brigade region, in snowy terrain along the Chinese border, and accommodates more than 300 households.
Over a thousand individuals from four villages have sought refuge as a result of the renewed conflict between the SAC and KIA forces that erupted in 2012.
