It has been 4 days since the Myitkyina-Mandalay highway has been closed and the concern of the Myitkyina local residents are reported to be arisen due to the skyrocketing prices of goods and the scarcity of goods in the Myitkyina city.
According to a local housewife of Myitkyina, “The iced-fish couldn’t be able to buy as much as I want. Not only the iced-fish but also other goods have been out of stock in the local market. The price of Coolgate toothpaste costs 9,000 kyats and the Signal toothpaste costs almost 7,000 kyats. In addition, there isn’t any goods entry in most of the stores. They are just selling the goods which have left in their stores. The goods seem to be scarce and the prices of the goods seem to be risen.”
As reported by the Moe Kaung Kyin Bus Station, the Myitkyina-Mandalay Pyidaungsu highway has been closed indefinitely since August 17 and either any cargo trucks or mini cars can be passed through the checkpoint. Additionally, all of the vehicles are reported to be blocked at Inndaw checkpoint.
In the previous weeks, the vehicles departed from Myitkyina were allowed to travel and the vehicles departed from Mandalay to Myitkyina were not allowed. However, the travelers from Mandalay had to return by flight to Myitkyina. Since then, the prices of the goods in Myitkyina started to rise and some of the goods have become shortage.
It is also stated that the phone signals and internet have been cut off in Myitkyina since July 21st. Therefore, the locals who make a living via online platform are struggling due to the phone signals and internet cut off. In addition, the skyrocketing prices of goods due to the road closure and the scarcity of fuel in the city lead the locals to face several difficulties in the present.
