According to Kachin State Residents, there is a shortage of fuel and the prices of goods are rising, and the prices of local goods are three times higher than the previous price in Putao Town.

“Usually 3 tiny bunches of green groceries such as rabbit green, mustard, and coriander cost 500 kyats, but they are now being sold for 500 kyats per bunch. Even so, no profit at all. The normal price of a can of raw chilies is 500 kyats, but now I have to sell at least three thousand kyats per can,” said a greengrocer from the morning market in Putao town.

The above resident continued to say that the reason for the increase in the price of local products is that they come to sell from the areas far away from Putao city, as well as the increase in the price of fuel in Putao town.

“We have to come here from our village to sell the groceries. The price of petrol has increased. We have to buy petrol for at least 20,000 kyats to 30,000 kyats. Currently there isn’t any one selling petrol. That’s why we are selling our green groceries at a higher price. Even so, the loss is more,” added the person above.

There are three places for the morning market in Putao Town. And it is reported that most of the greengrocers who sell vegetables are from other villages.

The highway of Myitkyina-Putao has been closed for more than a month, and the price of gasoline has risen to 20,000 kyats per liter and it has made it very difficult for locals to travel. In addition, the prices of local commodities are also rising.

Currently, the local green groceries such as rabbit green, mustard, coriander etc. are sold for 500 kyats per bunch and a can of green chilies is sold for up to 3,000 kyats in Putao Town. Therefore, the locals are worried that if the road closure duration will be longer, the situation for their livelihood will be worsen.
