The number of IDPs are increasing day by day due to the ongoing armed-clashes. According to UNHCR’s statement, the number of people fleeing the war has increased to more than 80,000 in the three years since the coup in Myanmar.
There were 110,500 people fleeing the war between 2011 and 2021, when the armed-clashes broke out in Kachin State and as of August 2024, there are 194,900 people fleeing the war after the nationwide coup.
In the statement, it is stated that there has been an increase of 84,400 people fleeing the war in more than 3 years after the coup. At the beginning of 2021, the armed-clashes had took place only in the provinces where the ethnic groups lived, however in the late period, the armed-clashes became fierce on a national scale, and it was found that the armed-clashes became fiercer in every area where the anti-coup armed-forces are stationed.
In addition, more than 10,000 people from 12 villages have fled due to the armed-clashes in the eastern Shwegu area since April 2023. It is also said that since March 7, 2024 when the Kachin Independence Army (KIA/KPDF) joint forces have started an offensive attack in Kachin State, leaving many villages where residents have fled.
It is reported that, most of the people have fled to the liberated areas, as well as some have fled to the forest for their safety. At present, the people who fled the war including local people are struggling due to the road closure and the phone signals and the internet cut off in Kachin State.
The number of people fleeing the war is increasing day by day and the Social Relief Associations which help the evacuees can’t support due to the increased number of evacuees. Consequently, the basic food and medical supplies are in need in every IDP camp.
The civil war has become more widespread in Myanmar, on the other hand, many people have been injured and killed every day due to the bombardment through drone and airstrike by the SAC forces. According to UNHCR, there are more than three million people who evacuated to safety due to the armed-clashes between the SAC forces and the anti-coup armed-forces nationwide.
