According to Putao residents, since the beginning of this year, local militia forces led by U Tang Gu Tang have been targeting Rawang men, claiming that one person from each household must serve as a militia soldier in some villages of Putao Township, Kachin State.
“Some elders from the local militia group gathered the villagers at the village hall and told them that one person from each household will have to serve as a militia soldier including former military veterans and local residents. And they said that they will have autonomy in their region, so that they need people to protect and govern their region,” said a local of Zion Village.
The Militia forces has started the campaign for new recruitment in Upper San Gaung Village, Duk Tan Village, Mula Shi Di Village and Zion Village in Putao Township, since the beginning of this year.
Another resident said, “All those who were listed before are being forced to do mandatory military service and I have heard that the military training will start in early February.”
In addition, those who have been recruited since the beginning of the year will be given military training from February, and they are still recruiting and convincing until today.
The locals are saying that they cannot accept to serve in the militia due to the fact that the militia do not represent the local people and they are the militia under SAC.
After the military takeover, Putao People’s Defense Force (PDF) and Khakabo groups have repeatedly offered warnings to the local militia group to join with them as soon as possible, but they are continuing to do so, according to local residents.
In last December, the Putao militia forces and the joint forces of the SAC had to leave the army-based camp from N-Hka Ga village, and the camp of Hkran Ti Dam was also attacked and occupied by the joint forces of KIA/ KPDF.
