If the Kachin border trade gates remain closed due to ongoing skirmishes, it is reported that farmers involved in sugarcane cultivation on the Kachin side are concerned about potential losses.
Following clashes along the Kachin border, the Chinese authorities have shut the trade gates at the border, including those at Mai Ja Yang and Loije, which are under the control of the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO). As a result, farmers engaged in sugarcane cultivation are encountering significant challenges in harvesting their crops.
Typically, the harvesting and exportation of sugarcane occur from December to March. However, sugarcane farmers are currently encountering labor shortages due to the closure of border gates caused by ongoing skirmishes. Should the border gates remain closed, the sugarcane industry is likely to suffer significant losses this year.
Since the conclusion of September last year, the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) joint forces-initiated assaults on the State Administration Council (SAC) positioned along the Kachin-China border, with the Militia and the Kachin Border Guards under the leadership of U Zahkung Ting Ying. As a result, the KIA joint forces successfully attacked and seized control of the Kachin Special Region (1), and the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) administration commenced operations in the newly captured territory.
Currently, the only city left to capture is Kanpaik Ti. There are 11 border gates along China's frontier, including Loi Je, Mai Ja Yang, Laiza, Kanpaik Ti, Pi Maw, Pang Wa, Hka Shan, Saji, Pajau, Mang Wein Gyi, and Kan Hpan. Furthermore, it has been reported that all of these border gates are currently suspended.
