The Kachin Independence Army (KIA) launched offensive attacks in Kachin State in March and has since captured over 100 military camps of the SAC. Consequently, the KIO is preparing to open schools in areas now occupied by the KIA.
In the 2023-2024 academic year, there were a total of 215 schools under the KIO. This year, 233 schools will be opened in the areas occupied by the KIA. Therefore, for the 2024-2025 academic year, there will be a total of 448 schools under the KIO headquarters.
As the school opening time approaches, schools under the KIO headquarters are already accepting enrollments and will open as in previous years. Similarly, local residents report that in the N-Jang Yang area, schools have been open since 2023 according to the KIO’s education department, and this year they will expand to the high school level.
Government schools in the city have been open since June 3, but many areas cannot open schools due to the political situation and armed clashes between the two armed forces. Additionally, many children in Kachin State are unable to attend school and are evacuating to safety because of the armed clashes, even though it is time for schools to start.
