Reports indicate that the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) has appointed a new Chief of Staff on May 18, following the death of Lieutenant General Rukhkyawng Hkawng Lum, the former KIA Chief of Staff, due to liver cancer.
To fill the vacancy left by Lieutenant General (also) Chief of Staff Rukhkyawng Hkawng Lum, General Wanghkang Aung Seng Lar, who previously served as KIA Deputy Chief of Staff (1), has been promoted and appointed as the new Chief of Staff. General Maran Zau Tawng, who was the Deputy Chief of Staff (2), has been appointed as the new Deputy Chief of Staff.
General Wanghkang Aung Seng Lar, the new KIA Chief of Staff, is recognized as a military expert with experience as both a battalion commander and a brigade commander within the KIA.
Lieutenant General Rukhkyawng Hkawng Lum, who was the Chief of Staff of the Kachin Independence Army, passed away from liver cancer on May 13 in Laiza, the KIA headquarter.
