The Bhamo Scout Team, tasked with monitoring the situation in the area, has indicated that the recent conflict between the two military factions in Bhamo, Kachin State, has subsided. However, reports regarding the capture of Bhamo airport by the KIA joint forces on January 9, as well as the seizure of the 47th Infantry Battalion base, remain unverified.
A village elder from Bhamo stated, "The news remains unconfirmed. I have not received any updates. When the skirmish began, there were claims that the 47th Battalion had been taken captive, leading some to believe it was true. I believe the situation remains unchanged. There have been drone strikes on the airport recently.”
At present, the conflict persists as the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) engages and eliminates the withdrawing forces in the vicinity of the 47th Infantry Battalion and Manyut Village. Hostilities are still occurring near Bhamo University; however, there are no indications of any clashes within Bhamo town itself. The overall situation is currently described as tranquil.
On December 4th, KIA joint forces initiated a coordinated offensive targeting both Bhamo and Mansi, the latter being the second capital of Kachin State. They successfully seized control of Mansi on January 8th.
On Thursday, January 9, reports surfaced on social media indicating that KIA joint forces had taken control of Bhamo airport. However, KIA spokesman Colonel Naw Bu was unable to verify this information, as reported by VOA.
Kachin sources report that approximately 300 members of the SAC are in the process of fleeing, while over 100 have been apprehended and have surrendered.
The leader of the State Administration Council (SAC), Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, addressed the Kachin people on Kachin State Day, asserting that peace could only be attained through political negotiations. However, it is important to note that numerous innocent civilians have lost their lives due to unprovoked airstrikes conducted by the SAC in the regions of Tanai, Hpakant, and Mohnyin.
