Residents of Myitkyina, located in Kachin State, express their concerns regarding travel safety as the frequency of motorcycle robberies involving individuals armed with knives continues to rise, even during daylight hours.
A resident of the 8 Mile area reported a rise in motorcycle thefts perpetrated by individuals armed with knives. She recounted, “I traveled from 8 Mile to the city for school. On my return, I took a less frequented shortcut from the Mang Hkring direction. Although it was daytime, I was approached by three men who obstructed my path on the motorcycle, causing it to topple. They threatened me with knives and stole my belongings, including my phone.”
He noted that following the disruption of internet services in Myitkyina, numerous internet cafes emerged, and there has been a significant increase in incidents of motorcycle thefts at knifepoint occurring while individuals were utilizing the internet at these establishments during the evening hours.
It is quite frightening at present. I find myself reluctant to venture outside after dark. Just last week, two women were assaulted at knifepoint, and their motorcycles were stolen upon their return from using the internet on USA Lum Tu Street, as reported by a resident of the Tatkone neighborhood.
The ongoing dysfunction of the administrative system has led to a rise in unemployment and a decline in income levels in Myitkyina. Consequently, incidents of theft and robbery have become more prevalent; however, officials have been unable to implement effective measures to address these issues.
