There are more People Who Used Drugs (PWUDs) on the wards’ streets and people started trading openly in Waingmaw, Kachin State.

After the military coup, there isn’t any arrests or actions taken upon the drug users and dealers. The users include young people, elderly adults and children who are not yet of legal age. And within these days, the drug users have been openly gathering on the side streets of the village and using them in groups.

“Before the coup, there are almost no drug dealers and users due to the frequently arresting of them by the respective officials. Now, I don’t want to see the drug users in the neighborhoods. Most of the users are good-looking men and some are disabled,” said a resident of Hkatan Village, Waingmaw Township.

Since the coup, the number of drug users and dealers in Waingmaw has not decreased. The above person said that it has even turned into a business, and young people are using it in groups on the streets without fear.

A local of Sili Ward also said that there are always drug dealers and drug users in the streets of Hkatan Ward and near the streets of the township stadium.

“After the coup, there are more drug users on these streets. Before, they came individually, but now they come in groups,” he said.

Before the coup, the number of drug dealers and users decreased due to the Town’s Elders and related elders often arrested and took action against drug dealers. But since the coup, there have been no arrests and actions taken, as a result the number of drug dealers in the neighborhood has doubled than before.

A local in Waingmaw said that, political crisis, economic difficulties and problems with employment are causing good men and young people to stray their mind and lead them to become victims of drugs.
