The IDPs report a rise in the number of evacuees relocating to the territory controlled by the KIA, attributed to heightened military operations by the SAC in Naung Hkying village, from which the evacuees are currently escaping.
Individuals who had previously evacuated to the vicinity of Naung Hkying village were able to travel without restrictions. However, as of December 1, 2024, the State Administration Council (SAC) has intensified military operations in close proximity to the internally displaced persons (IDP) camp. Consequently, a majority of the IDPs are making arrangements to relocate to the area under the control of the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO), situated in the northern section of the IDP camp, with some individuals having already commenced their relocation.
“Currently, tranquility prevails along the Myitkyina-Laiza highway. However, residing in the IDP camp has become increasingly challenging. The situation on the Nawng Hkying side is becoming more concerning. Since December, approximately 14 houses in Gara Yang village have been relocated,” as stated by a Naung Hkying IDP.
The military advance of the SAC towards Nawng Hkying village is said to have commenced following the demise of the Gwi Htu militia leader, Lasan Aung Wah, in November of the previous year.
The SAC forces are conducting operations in and around the villages of Nang Hkying and Labang Kahtawng. Furthermore, they are questioning individuals who are passing through the area.
It has been reported that, as a result of the conflict that commenced in May 2024, residents from 20 villages in WaingMaw Township have sought refuge in Naung Hkying Village, where there are presently 9 internally displaced persons (IDP) camps established.
