In light of the ongoing intense conflict in the militia-controlled regions of Kachin State, Tang Gu Than, the local militia leader situated in the Putao area, issued a letter in early October directing the Lancel local group to collaborate in ensuring the security of the territory under his authority.
The statement indicates that “the Lancel Local Group is consistently dedicated to enhancing regional security through collaboration with the national government as required. Currently, the local inhabitants residing in Sum Pra Bum town within Putao District, as well as those in Chipwi and Sawlaw town in Sawlaw District, are experiencing significant hardships due to attacks from terrorist groups.”
Therefore, it is known that he was instructed to cooperate with the emphasis on regional security. Putao, Nawng Mon, Hkawng Lan Phu and Lancel areas are the areas where the Tang Gu Than local militia is stationed. Given the ongoing intense conflict in the Kachin Special Region (1), local inhabitants have indicated that they might have been advised to enhance security measures due to concerns that the clashes could extend into the territory managed by the Putao militia.
The ongoing escalation of skirmishes between the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) joint forces and the State Administration Council (SAC) in Kachin State has prompted the SAC and allied militia forces to bolster their military presence. They are currently engaged in military operations in the Sum Pra Bum area, aiming to regain control of this region within the Putao District.
