The Checkpoints on The Myitkyina – Tanai Highway Are Increasing and Collecting More Taxes

As reported by a cargo truck driver, the number of checkpoints increasing on the Myitkyina-Tanai Road (Lido Road) comparing to the past. Now there are 11 SAC checkpoints including a KIA checkpoint and on top of that they are collecting more taxes than before.


It is stated that, there are a total of 12 checkpoints along the highway of Myitkyina-Tanai and each of checkpoints collects taxes up to 20,000 Ks to 50,000 Ks. Additionally, the checkpoint of the SAC which is located 21 miles away from Myitkyina Town which is also known as (21) mile checkpoint collects up to 200,000 Ks for taxes per vehicle.


It is said that, the highway between Myitkyina- Tanai was rough since before and in the rainy season it becomes worse. Moreover, it is stated that some vehicles are stuck in the mud and are pulled by the tractors and backhoes from the mud to continue their journey.


The fees of tractors and backhoes which pull the vehicles also cost 30,000 Ks, 80,000 Ks, 100,000 Ks and 200,000 Ks depend on the vehicle types, such as AD van cars, 6 or 12-wheeler Cargo trucks. As a result, in order to get to Tanai the cargo truck drivers have to spend a large amount of money.


As a consequence, the drivers driving along the Tanai Ledo highway have to expend more than 10 lakhs for one way, including the fuel price for their vehicle.
