As reported by the car drivers, there are increasing checkpoints and more taxes are collected at the checkpoints along the Myitkyina-Tanai Ledo highway. In addition, the vehicles which are passing by the damaged highway are pulling out by the tractors to get through from the muddy path and the car drivers want the relevant officials to mend the damaging road.

According to the cargo truck driver, “there are more than 10 places where the vehicles have to pull out by the tractors. In some villages there are 3 places where the path was damaged in a village, such as the village entrance, the middle of the village and the exist of the village. There are no one who are mending the destructed roads, they just lend their tractors to pull out the vehicles from the muddy paths with charges. I think both the villagers and the relevant officials should collaborate and mend the devastating roads together.”

There are 12 checkpoints along the highway from Myitkyina to Tanai and at least 20,000 kyats and up to 200,000 kyats taxes are collected per vehicle at one checkpoint. Moreover, the tractors’ fees to pull out the vehicles from the muddy and destructed paths, have been charged depending on the type of vehicles’ size such as AD van, 6 wheeled cargo truck and 12 wheeled cargo trucks. It is known that the tractors’ fees are charged from 30,000 kyats to 80,000 kyats, 100,000 kyats adding up to a maximum of 200,000 kyats. In addition, as said by the car drivers they have arrived to Tanai after costing a large sum of money.

As stated by the car drivers, there are more than ten places where the paths are destructed and the car drivers want the relevant authorities to mend the paths.

“There is shortage of goods along the roads. The worst thing was the villagers are selling water from their wells with 1,000 kyats per 0.6-liter bottle. The water from the well is existing as itself, but they are doing business with it. It is not acceptable. They should be sympathetic to the travelers,” said the above car driver.

The Myitkyina-Tanai highway has been rough since before and as the rainy season has arrived, the vehicles which pass through the paths are pulled by the tractors due to the bad conditions of the road.

Therefore, the car drivers who are running their vehicles along the Myitkyina-Tanai Ledo highway have to pay at least 3,000,000 kyats per one way trip including the fuel prices. In addition, it is said that the trip which takes 4 days for round trip has increased to 12 days for round trip.
