It has been reported that, despite the reopening of the China-Myanmar border gates in Kachin State on December 13th, only one border gate is currently facilitating the export of tissue bananas to China, while imports from China remain nonexistent.
The reopening of border gates is a result of a bilateral agreement established following discussions between the KIO/KIA governments and the Chinese government in China.
KIA spokesman Colonel Naw Bu stated, "The Chinese authorities have indicated that all gates are open; however, entry for individuals is prohibited. Additionally, vehicles and goods are not permitted to enter or exit. This is the complete information provided by the Foreign Affairs Department," as reported by various local news sources.
A resident of Ko Panwa stated that the KIO will assume the responsibility of issuing passports at the border gates presently controlled by the KIA joint forces. He mentioned, "I have been informed that the Kachin side will now facilitate the issuance of passports for passage through various border gates, including the Pang Wa border gate."
Conversely, there is considerable anticipation regarding the KIO government's approach to re-exporting and importing goods. The public is optimistic that the reopening of border gates will result in a decrease in commodity prices.
