In recent days, residents of Myitkyina have reported continuous artillery fire by State Administration Council (SAC) troops, with heavy weapon sounds heard day and night. Security checks have also been intensified at the Bala Min Htin Bridge, which connects Myitkyina and Waingmaw, according to locals.
Since April 25, the sounds of heavy artillery fire by the SAC have been heard nonstop in Myitkyina and Waingmaw, persisting as of today, April 28.
On April 26, an artillery shell landed and exploded in Myitkyina’s Thida neighborhood, resulting in civilian casualties. Some residents also claim that military forces have occupied several schools within the city.
Meanwhile, security checks at the Bala Min Htin Bridge have increased, with stricter inspections of vehicles, motorcycles, and phones. More soldiers and police have been deployed for security.
“Security checks at the bridge are routine, but lately, there’s been a heavier presence of troops and police. They’re thoroughly inspecting everything, even cargo in vehicles. Sometimes, traffic gets so congested that movement becomes nearly impossible,” said a traveler.
While vehicles are the primary focus, motorcycles are occasionally stopped and searched as well. Last week, a young man was arrested after his phone was found to contain a group photo of people wearing KIA uniforms.
The youth, who was traveling from Sadung, was detained at the Bala Min Htin Bridge. Witnesses say he has been out of contact since his arrest.
Although the SAC has announced a temporary ceasefire, it has continued large-scale offensives in areas including Bhamo, Hpakant, and Kamaing since late April.
