A man and a woman were shot while riding a motorbike, resulting in the immediate death of the male passenger in Sitapru Ward, Myitkyina, Kachin State.

An incident occurred on the west side road of Myitkyina University, where a male and a female were shot while riding a motorbike at approximately 5:45 AM this morning. The male riding a motorbike, who was in his 50s, sustained a gunshot wound to the neck and lacerations to the left side of his face, resulting in his immediate death. The female passenger, who was seated in the back, was transported to Myitkyina General Hospital with a gunshot wound to the left side of her chest, where she unfortunately passed away approximately one hour after arriving at the hospital, as reported by the Facebook page of the Myanmar Social Relief Association.

According to a local resident, an unidentified group of individuals shot the male and female while they were riding the motorbike, and the motive behind the shooting remains unknown.

As per a local resident in the vicinity of the incident, “I perceived approximately four to five gunshots in rapid succession, leading me to believe there was an armed conflict at the BalaMinHtin Bridge. Upon hearing the screams and cries of my neighbor, I exited my residence and discovered two individuals lying on the side of the road in a pool of blood. I did not observe the perpetrator, therefore I am unable to identify the individual responsible for the shooting,” he conveyed to Pajau Media through a telephone conversation.

Furthermore, based on statements provided by local residents, it is possible that the male and female victims were targeted while en route to their farmland. Some residents speculate that it may have been a robbery attempt, however, Pajau Media has not yet been able to substantiate this claim.

An eyewitness provided additional information, stating, “Individuals have suggested that this was a robbery. However, it is noteworthy that the bag containing more than 100 lakhs was not taken, with only their phone being stolen. Consequently, I am unable to definitively ascertain the motive behind the shooting. Based on the items found on their motorbike, it appears that they were headed to their farmland.”

Regrettably, the male individual seated in the front seat succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the incident. The female individual, who was seated in the back seat, sustained severe injuries and unfortunately passed away approximately one hour after being transported to the hospital.

There has been a recent increase in the frequency of knife-related crimes and armed robberies in Mytkyina Town. Furthermore, on March 10th, the body of a young man was discovered in Tatkone Ward, on Sumprabum Main Road, in front of the Mytel office. The victim had been shot and his hands had been bound.
