Residents in Mohnyin, Kachin State, report that the Shanni Militia has been aggressively conducting conscription operations for two consecutive days.
According to local sources, on April 3 at 8:30 PM, over 10 youths using Wi-Fi at the Bossy tea shop and Taw Win Billiards place in Kantaw Kone ward were forcibly taken away by the militia. An escapee stated that the militia arrived in two vehicles and abruptly seized the group. Those who tried to flee were shot at, though no injuries were reported.
Additionally, on April 2 at 3:30 PM, 11 young men—mostly in their twenties—playing football at Ngwe Pyin Lae futsal field in Kantaw Kone ward were also conscripted by the Shanni Militia.
The 11 abducted youths were reportedly students attending a Chinese language school (Sein Lel Yay) in preparation for studying in Taiwan. Many were displaced students from Indawgyi region.
Mohnyin currently has two factions of the Shanni Militia—one under the military’s control and another independent group. Locals say it remains unclear which faction is behind the recent conscription drive.
