Locals say that some large mining companies have temporarily suspended operations due to increased military activity on both sides in the Hpakant region of Kachin State, along with aerial shelling.
A jade miner stated, "Numerous companies have ceased operations. The majority have halted their activities due to concerns regarding the potential resumption of military operations and the occurrence of frequent airstrikes."
Local sources indicate that the SAC has escalated military operations in the Hpakant area since early January, with a notable increase in airstrikes, leading several mining companies to halt their activities.
On February 27, at 5 am, the SAC forces, organized into two groups and arranged in two columns, advanced from the Hpakant military base. They engaged in combat with KIA forces at the Maw Tawng KIA checkpoint shortly after their deployment. The SAC military base repeatedly launched heavy artillery strikes on the areas of conflict.
On February 25, two fighter jets from the SAC's Tada Oo Air Force executed an airstrike.
Residents have reported that the ongoing military operations between the State Administration Council (SAC) and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) in the Hpakant area are expected to intensify. Since January of this year, various organizations have been advising the inhabitants of Hpakant to construct secure trenches to ensure their safety.
