Tragedy struck Pangwa town as the bodies of approximately 50 rare earth mining workers remain missing following a devastating collapse of a mining block. Despite ongoing efforts, no bodies have been recovered as of this morning.

The collapse occurred suddenly on June 19th at noon, engulfing nearly all workers present, including the cook. The precarious conditions exacerbated by heavy rains have hampered search and rescue operations.

The affected mining block, operated by U Zahkung Ting Ying, a militia leader in Kachin Special Region (1), and his son, has been particularly vulnerable to collapses due to the region's torrential rains during the current rainy season. Just earlier this month, on June 4th, another collapse claimed the lives of over 20 workers, marking a tragic pattern of incidents in the area.

Rescue teams continue to face significant challenges due to the magnitude of the landslide, which has made recovery efforts exceedingly difficult. The incident on June 19th stands as the deadliest in recent memory, underscoring the hazards faced by workers in the region's rare earth mining industry.
