The Irrawaddy River in Myitkyina Town, Kachin State, has been rapidly rising since May 28th, leading to significant flooding. By May 29th, several neighborhoods in Myitkyina began to experience flood problems.
The rise in the Irrawaddy River is attributed to heavy rains in glacier regions such as Putao, Machanbaw, Nawng Mun, Hkawng Lan Phu, and Pannandin. Additionally, the May Hka and Mali Hka rivers have risen sharply, leading local residents to fear that the Irrawaddy River in Myitkyina may continue to rise.
In Myitkyina, the water level has been increasing at a rate of one foot per hour. Although the current water level of the Irrawaddy River is stable, residents along the riverbanks are advised to remain vigilant.
As of 6:30 AM this morning, the Irrawaddy River in Myitkyina had reached a height of 1017 cm, just 183 cm short of the critical water mark of 1200 cm. The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has warned that similar flooding could occur in Bhamo, Shwegu, and Katha towns.
In a related incident, ten houses and many possessions were washed away by the sudden overflow of spring water in Myaw Maw Pa Village, Chiphwi Township, early yesterday morning. According to BBC News, nearly 400 people in some neighborhoods of Myitkyina were facing flood problems as of 8:00 PM.
Additionally, the townships of Myitkyina, Waingmaw, Chiphwi, and Putao, where river levels are rising and approaching critical points, are areas of military tension, prompting thousands of local residents to evacuate to safety.
