Farmers report that the price of a bag of Chin dung rice in the Inndawgyi region has decreased to 35,000 kyats, while a bag of old rice is priced at 65,000 kyats; however, there are currently no purchasers.
Currently, a bag of Chin Dung Rice is priced at 35,000 kyats, while a bag of older rice is available for 65,000 kyats. However, there are no buyers for these products. The expenses associated with farming are substantial, leading me to secure loans to cultivate the land. I had anticipated being able to repay the loans upon the arrival of the paddy harvest. Unfortunately, the prevailing price of paddy has not met my expectations, and I find myself weary of the farming endeavor," stated a farmer from Mai Naung.
Last year, a basket of Chin Dung paddy was priced at 14,000 kyats; however, this year, the price has decreased to only 8,000 kyats. The ongoing unrest in the region has led to a cessation of traders visiting to purchase paddy. Additionally, those who procured paddy in the previous year are now encountering challenges due to the unfavorable market price, as reported by a paddy trader.
Despite borrowing harvesters from Hopin Town for rice harvesting, the region remains challenging to access because of security issues, leading to postponed harvests and diminished rice production. A farmer from Mai Naung noted that even those who possess their own harvesters are experiencing financial losses relative to their rice yields, primarily due to the elevated fuel costs.
Farmers indicate that the decline in rice prices may be attributed to the absence of traders in the Inndawgyi region, as the Chinese border gates are not consistently open. In Mohnyin, the price for a bag of old Chin Dung rice has dropped to merely 80,000 kyats.
Numerous rice and bean fields in Chaung Wa, Lone Sant Ywar Thit Village, and various areas of the Inndawgyi Region have been adversely affected by hailstorms attributed to climate change, leading to a complete failure in rice harvests.
