Local residents report that the State Administration Council has prohibited shops and hotels in Mohnyin that installed Starlink Wi-Fi from utilizing the internet.
The shop owner who established Starlink WiFi stated, "We were informed that the use of the device was prohibited, prompting us to deactivate it. There were indications that authorities would take action, including arrests, if they discovered the WiFi device. Consequently, we not only turned it off but also disassembled it completely. The Wi-Fi had only been operational for a little over a month, and now we are faced with the necessity of shutting it down once more. If the authorities do not wish for us to utilize it, they should have prohibited its importation from the outset. It is quite inconvenient for us to dismantle all the devices after having just set them up."
Residents have reported that Wi-Fi devices have been operational in Mohnyin Town since September. At the outset, users were charged 20,000 kyats per hour for internet access; however, the price has now been reduced to 5,000 kyats per hour, at which point the SAC has prohibited further usage. Consequently, many locals are experiencing challenges in maintaining communication with their distant family members.
