In the recent days, the local residents have been living in fear due to the frequent arrests of young pedestrians and civilians who gather at restaurants with their friends. This information was shared by the residents of Myitkyina, Kachin State.
The residents of Myitkyina expressed concern about the increasing number of young individuals being apprehended on the streets and in shops within the city. These arrests have become more prevalent in recent times.
According to reports, an unidentified armed group arrived at the Bum Noi restaurant in Sitapru Ward, Myitkyina, at approximately noon yesterday. They entered the establishment in two vehicles and proceeded to arrest at least five young individuals who were dining at the restaurant.
One young man, who witnessed the incident, provided some information. He stated, “I only recognize Seng Mun Mai and Mung Hpan. The remaining individuals may have been their friends. I cannot confirm the exact number of people arrested, but I believe there were at least five young individuals in total.”
In a similar vein, two young men from a barbershop in Du Kahtawng Ward (3) were apprehended by an unidentified armed group in civilian attire at approximately 7:00 PM yesterday evening.
Furthermore, on March 18, an incident occurred in which three girls went missing while roaming around their neighborhood. Regrettably, only one of the girls returned home, leaving the whereabouts of the other two unknown.
As a consequence, local residents have expressed concern over the recent surge in arrests of young individuals in Myitkyina town. However, the identity of the organization or group responsible for these arrests remains uncertain, and no information has been released regarding the status of the detained young civilians.
Since March 7, the armed conflict in Kachin State has intensified due to escalating military tensions between two armed groups. According to local sources, both armed groups are actively recruiting young civilians to bolster their respective forces.
Furthermore, the State Administrative Council (SAC) enacted the Conscription Law on February 10th, and commencing from March 17th, the summonses for military service have been dispatched to the neighborhoods via the district governors under the SAC. Additionally, it has been reported that the ward administrators have granted authorization to apprehend young pedestrian civilians for military service.
