As stated by the local residents, the Nawng Hkai Marina, located on the Mali-Hka River in Nawng Hkai Village, has been indefinitely closed by the SAC since March. The closure of the marina has caused transportation issues for locals who own mustard farms along the Mali-Hka River.
"Most of the local residents are those who work and live on mustard farms along the Hpakant Yang side. They transport their mustard by boat annually. Their farms are mostly situated in areas that are a two-day journey on foot but only two hours by boat. Currently, due to the marina closure, locals are unable to transport their mustard and are simply stacking it on the riverbank adjacent to the marina, awaiting its reopening," explained a resident of Nawng Hkai.
The mustard plantation business along the Mali-Hka River is vital for most residents of Putao, who heavily rely on it for their livelihoods. The Nawng Hkai Marina serves as a crucial port for transporting goods, particularly during this season when harvested mustard seeds need to be transported.
Unfortunately, with the marina's closure, residents are left with no choice but to stack their mustard along the riverbank, awaiting the marina's reopening. Their concern grows as they fear that prolonged closure may result in the destruction of their mustard seeds.
"The majority of Putao locals heavily rely on boat transportation for their livelihoods. Travelling by foot is challenging due to the sandy shore. Consequently, if the marina remains closed for an extended period, it could significantly impact the locals' means of living," expressed the resident.
Currently, the local militia is stationed at a key position where Nawng Hkai Marina intersects with the Mali-Hka River. There is speculation that the military council has indefinitely closed the marina, possibly aiming to obstruct the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and Kachin People's Defense Force (KPDF) joint forces from delivering food supplies.
