Frequent changes and disruptions in the scheduled electricity supply in Myitkyina, Kachin State, have caused significant difficulties for residents, affecting not only residential areas but also government staff housing and government offices.

“There were complaints that government offices were receiving uninterrupted power while the public faced scheduled blackouts. In response, the authorities imposed power rationing even for government offices. Now, not only government employees but also the general publics are facing hardships,” said a Myitkyina resident.

Due to the power rationing system, some neighborhoods had submitted complaints regarding the continuous electricity supply to government offices and staff housing, which led to the recent implementation of scheduled outages for these facilities as well.

Since the beginning of the year, government offices and staff housing have only received power on a limited schedule, which has caused disruptions in services such as passport processing and smart card issuance.

“In the past, when the electricity supply was stable, passport and smart card processing didn’t take long. But now, with frequent power cuts and system failures, we’re handling at least 50 applicants per day, making the process much slower,” said a source close to the passport office.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that more young people are seeking to study and work abroad, leading to a surge in passport applications, with applicants dedicating more time and effort to complete the process.
