Residents of Myitkyina, Kachin State, are facing increasing difficulties due to more frequent power outages compared to previous periods. The outages have made it challenging to charge electrical devices and sustain business operations, according to local reports.

“Power cuts have become more frequent recently. In the past, electricity was supplied to neighbourhoods on a rotational basis at scheduled times. However, now the power supply is irregular, making it difficult to run businesses or even charge phones and motorbikes,” said a local resident.

Since the beginning of the year, electricity was distributed to different neighbourhoods in a scheduled manner, but recently, these schedules have been disrupted, causing significant inconvenience. The situation has particularly affected businesses and daily activities that rely on a stable power supply.

Previously, neighbourhoods were divided into groups A, B, and C, with each group receiving power for six-hour shifts. However, since the start of the G-12 university entrance exams, the regular power supply has been disrupted. When inquiries were made to the Buga Hydropower Office regarding the issue, officials responded that the power shortage was due to insufficient electricity supply.

“Because of the frequent blackouts, I went to the electricity office to ask about it, but they simply said there wasn't enough power. I’m not sure if that’s the real reason,” the same resident added.

It was also learned that the electricity currently supplied to Myitkyina and Waingmaw is not from the Buga Hydropower Plant but from the national grid controlled by the government in Lower Myanmar.
