It's been two months since the phone and internet services were cut off across Kachin State by the authorities on July 21. Since then, the region has experienced daily fierce clashes in various townships.
The shutdown has caused ongoing difficulties for residents, particularly for those working or studying online. Despite some areas in Myitkyina city having intermittent access to MPT phone signals, communication remains challenging even for simple phone calls. Coupled with the communications blackout, the region's political instability has made travel unsafe, leading locals to hope for the swift restoration of phone and internet services.
Since the KIA joint forces launched their offensive, the number of people displaced by the conflict has risen daily. Many IDP camps are now facing greater difficulties due to the lack of communication.
Additionally, the prices of essential goods have surged, and supplies are scarce due to the blockade of the Myitkyina-Mandalay highway since mid-July.
In the Myitkyina and Hpakant areas, where IP Star and Star Link services are available, the internet can be accessed for 20,000 kyats per hour. However, reports suggest that the SAC is investigating and arresting people who use the internet, except for the service providers themselves.
