A local resident reported that the Nay Pyi Taw Court has sentenced Kyaw Thura Ko, the perpetrator of the rape and murder of 15-year-old Gumring Du Naw in Duttan Ward, Putao Township, to death on two counts. This was confirmed by the Putao District Judge who accompanied the accused to Nay Pyi Taw.
Kyaw Thura Ko, 24, had previously been sentenced to death by the Putao District Court on August 6, 2024, for charges of rape, murder, and theft.
A person close to the prosecution emphasized the need for a swift resolution, stating, “This case must be settled as soon as possible to prevent such crimes from happening again in our region. If not, there will be no security here. Recently, there have been many murders and robberies—crimes that were unheard of in the past decade.”
A relative of the victim, Gumring Du Naw, explained that the death sentence handed down by the Putao District Court was appealed to the Nay Pyi Taw Court, but the court upheld the sentence, stating that it was a fitting punishment for the crime. The family has urged authorities to proceed with the trial without further delay.
The incident occurred on May 10, 2024, when 15-year-old Gumring Du Naw was raped and murdered by Kyaw Thura Ko, an employee at a metal and furniture shop in Duttan Ward, Putao Township.
