As reported by the local residents, the locals from the east of Putao area do farming as their main local business. Thus, this year the number of the farmland which are destroyed by the rats are increasing.
According to a local farmer, “We don’t have any other side business except from farming in the region. The paddies in the farm have already grown. However, not only the wildfowls but also the rats destroyed the farmland and it depressed us. Although, the wildfowls can be cast out, the rats can’t. In addition, to make trap for the rats, we need to go to Putao to buy the necessary materials. Moreover, the routes to Putao are very tough. Therefore, it is not easy for us to cast the rats out of our farmland.”
The rate of rice which are destroyed by the rats are increasing than the previous year and it seems to be destroyed all the fields. Hence, it is known that the rate of the rice which is yielding in the region are decreasing year by year.
It has been many years since the farmlands from villages, such as Ding Hkyet, Dingga and Marut which are located at the east of Putao were destroyed by the rats. Additionally, Njang Yang region is the worst region where farmlands are destroyed by the rats this year.
The areas which mentioned above are situated at the outskirt of Putao region and are the areas which landslides and mountain collapses are frequently occurred due to the heavy rainfalls and floods in rainy season. Moreover, it is very difficult to travel even with a motorbike in the rainy season in those areas.
Although the locals get the essential supplies and foods such as salt and cooking oil from the Putao, the present skyrocketing prices and shortage of goods in the Putao region get the locals into trouble than the previous years.
