Data indicates that during the three-year military coup in Myanmar, 101,474 civilian residences were destroyed as a result of arson committed by the State Administration Council (SAC) and its affiliated groups.

In August 2024, a total of 425 houses were consumed by fire. Analyzing the data by State and Region, it is evident that the Sagaing Region experienced the most significant loss, with 73,351 homes destroyed, representing over 69 percent of the total civilian residences affected by fire across the country.

In 2021, the SAC and its affiliated organizations set fire to a total of 2,111 civilian residences. The destruction continued in 2022, with 46,856 homes lost, followed by 31,484 homes in 2023, and an additional 21,023 homes destroyed by August 2024. An analysis of the monthly data reveals that the peak incidence of house burnings occurred in December 2022, resulting in the loss of 10,562 homes.

Over the course of more than three years following the military coup, confrontations between the State Administration Council (SAC) and anti-coup armed groups have escalated significantly. In regions where armed resistance is established, the SAC and its affiliated entities have been systematically setting fire to and demolishing civilian residences. Furthermore, they are incinerating the locations of these confrontations as well as the villages that provide support to the anti-coup forces. Alongside aerial bombardments and intense artillery shelling, numerous civilian homes have been obliterated.

Numerous individuals have experienced the destruction of their homes due to the ongoing skirmishes. In light of the significant challenges they are encountering, local Social Relief Associations are actively engaged in relief efforts, albeit facing their own obstacles. Furthermore, Data For Myanmar has urged both international and local organizations to collaborate with local social aid groups and to expedite their support for humanitarian assistance.
