A mudslide occurred at around 8:00 AM today, March 21, blocking roads with thick mud and debris in Hpakant township, Nam Maw Village. The incident took place in Nam Maw Village, where a mud pond collapsed, causing the sludge to flow onto the main road and rendering it impassable.
The mudslide originated from the upper part of Nam Maw Village and swept down onto the main road, making it impossible for pedestrians to pass. Videos of the incident have been widely shared on social media, showing the extent of the damage.
Local social welfare groups quickly responded to the scene to clear and clean the affected area. However, residents expressed concerns over the lack of accountability from both the government and private companies operating in the region.
A local resident from Hpakant stated, "These are company-owned lands. Landslides and mud pond collapses keep happening, but no government or company takes responsibility. There are still large mud ponds in the area, and we are worried they might collapse too."
The Hpakant region, known for its jade mining, has seen frequent landslides and mud pond collapses, often resulting in casualties and significant property damage. Residents have called for urgent action from the government and companies to prevent further harm to the community. However, no one has stepped forward to address the issue.
Since the military coup in 2021, unregulated mining activities have increased in the area, exacerbating the risks of such disasters. Earlier this year, on January 13, a mudslide in Sabaw Village destroyed over 50 homes and claimed the lives of more than 30 people.
The Hpakant region remains at high risk for similar incidents, with residents urging immediate intervention to ensure public safety.
