Clashes between the Myanmar military (SAC) and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) near Lawa Village along the Myitkyina-Ledo Road remain tense, preventing displaced residents from returning home, according to a local who fled the conflict.

The military has reportedly attempted to reoccupy its former outpost in upper Lawa Village, but the KIA has resisted, leading to escalating hostilities.

"The military said they would reoccupy their old base in Lawa Village, but the KIA opposed it, so tensions are high right now. Since troops moved into the village, almost all residents have fled," said a displaced villager.

The military and allied militia forces have been shelling the area around Lawa Village while conducting drone surveillance, forcing remaining civilians to flee. Escapees also reported facing forced inspections along their routes.

Most Lawa residents began fleeing on March 22 when SAC and allied forces advanced into the area.

"As soon as troops entered the village, people ran to the hills. The military even fired heavy weapons when they saw flashlights on the mountain. Only after village elders confirmed they were civilians did they stop. They also strictly search people on the road—even forcing open rice sacks. The situation in Lawa is extremely tense now," a displaced person said.

The military-backed militia has occupied Lawa Village since March 22, with an estimated 200 troops stationed there. Locals were reportedly ordered not to lock their homes, with threats of arson if they disobeyed.

Additionally, the military has taken over government schools and civilian homes in Lawa Village for use as bases.
