Despite a public announcement of a temporary nationwide ceasefire, Myanmar’s military junta has continued its aerial and heavy artillery attacks, resulting in the deaths of 38 civilians and injuring 29 others in Kachin State, according to a statement released by the National Unity Government (NUG).
The attacks occurred while the country was grappling with the aftermath of a powerful earthquake, compounding the humanitarian crisis.
Although the junta had declared a temporary ceasefire from April 2 to April 22, it carried out at least six airstrikes in Kachin State alone during this period. The state has recorded the highest number of civilian casualties and injuries nationwide due to these continued assaults.
Based on documented incidents between March 28 and April 8, the military conducted three airstrikes in Bhamo, and one each in Mansi, Waingmaw, and Hpakant townships.
Despite their own ceasefire declaration, the junta has not adhered to it, continuing military operations—including airstrikes—across the country, with Kachin State being hit the hardest.
