The Mandalay-Myitkyina highway has been indefinitely closed due to ongoing clashes between the People's Defense Force (KPDF) and the State Administration Council (SAC) in Kanbalu Township, forcing travelers to take long and difficult detours.

According to drivers, the highway was shut down by the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and KPDF on February 19 following intense fighting with SAC forces. As a result, vehicles are now rerouted through alternative paths, including the Sabay Nanthar village road, which is poorly maintained and difficult to navigate.

The prolonged travel time has caused significant disruptions, with perishable goods such as meat, fish, and vegetables spoiling before reaching their destinations. Drivers report that the journey now takes between five days and a week due to rough roads and delays.

In addition to the road closure, reports suggest that both SAC and KIA/KPDF forces are ramping up recruitment efforts along the Mandalay-Myitkyina highway, with increased toll gates and frequent clashes further complicating travel.
