Starting from November 18th, 2023, gas stations in Waingmaw township, Kachin State have been selling gasoline in limit to the locals in a set short period of time which is only half day: 1 liter per 1 motorbike according to the local resident.

A local resident reported that a litter of gasoline went up to 3,000 kyats and one person could only buy 1 litter each.

“Since three days, they’d been sold like this. The price didn’t go up that high, but we couldn’t get the amount we need. They’ve set that only one person could buy 1 litter each” said a local.

Currently, only Zay Yar Min, King and TOP gas stations are available within Waingmaw town, while Ayeyarwaddy gas station is the only station available outside of Waingmaw.

In consequences, locals have to rush to the available stations forming a long queue to get limited gasoline.

On the other hand, the same situation happening in Myitkyina town which resulted in shortage of gasoline and almost all of the gas stations inside the town have faced with closures.

“As I have to go to Nawng Nang, I searched for gasoline around the town, but the stations replied that they don’t have gasoline in stored. Later, I was able to get it from Zay Yar Min gas station, but It was only for 3,000 mmk. So I had to look for another stations to get the amount I need. I had to fill 92 and 95 gasoline together in my motorbike to get to my destination. At last, I can continue the travel”, said a local woman.

In the present, locals are facing challenges and worrying that they would’ve a very limited access to transportation because of the shortage of gasoline in the town.

The reason of the gasoline shortages currently happening in Kachin State is the blockage of Myitkyina – Mandalay union high way because of the continuous armed tension between SAC and the anti-coup armed forces.
