Residents in Putao are expressing concern over rumors that the Myitkyina-Putao highway may close again in mid-September. The highway, recently reopened after repairs due to severe weather damage, could soon be blocked once more, adding to local worries.
A local Putao resident explained, “Fuel and goods prices have only slightly dropped, yet rumors of the highway closing are already spreading. Passenger cars only recently resumed travel to Putao, but cargo trucks still face difficulty due to poor road conditions. Locals are still struggling with these challenges.”
The same resident added, “If the highway closes again, fighting in the area may intensify. SAC troops have been advancing toward Sum Pra Bum, and residents from Sumpi Yang have been evacuating for months. The entire highway area is unsafe, but the SAC hasn’t officially announced any road closure yet."
Reports suggest the highway might close after September 20, though the specific reason remains unclear. Locals speculate it may be due to escalating political tensions.
Since early 2024, the Myitkyina-Putao highway has been frequently closed due to clashes between armed forces. Additionally, the region faces issues like soaring prices, communication disruptions, and shortages of essential goods and food supplies.
