A Kachin Independence Army (KIA) encampment near the Shadu Zup Wakha gold mining area in Hpakant Township fell under heavy assault by the Min Zay Thant militia and joint military council forces based in Warazup village, ultimately leading to its surrender.
The attack, which took place on March 6, was a large-scale offensive involving air and drone strikes. The KIA, which had only eight soldiers stationed at the base, was unable to receive reinforcements and was forced to retreat. As a result, they lost their base, along with weapons and ammunition, and suffered one casualty.
Local sources reported that the military council has been intensifying air and heavy artillery strikes in Hpakant. In response, the KIA has advised residents to construct bomb shelters in anticipation of further escalations.
“They told us to build bomb shelters because of the frequent airstrikes and fears that the military would escalate attacks,” a resident from Hpakant stated.
Min Zay Thant militia forces have been actively carrying out operations in villages along the Tanai-Lido road, regularly deploying heavy artillery fire. Additionally, they have occupied religious sites that hold cultural and spiritual significance for local communities.
According to reports from residents, since early 2025, joint forces of the military council and Min Zay Thant militia have been preparing for further military action in the Mohnyin region, the Tanai-Lido road, and northern Myitkyina. They have also been engaged in continuous recruitment efforts to bolster their ranks.
