KHRW Statement On Assassination Of Cleric Hkun Jaw Li

The Kachin Human Rights Watch (KHRW) has also released a statement regarding the unfortunate assassination of the cleric U Hkun Jaw Li from Lam Braw Yang Village. The incident occurred at approximately 2:00 PM while U Hkun Jaw Li was residing in his home in Nanmati town, Kachin State. The identity of the armed group responsible for this act remains unknown.


“A religious leader, Mr. U Hkun Jaw Li, was fatally shot in Nanmati Town, Kachin State, by an unidentified armed group. He held the positions of cleric at Nanmati Baptist Church (KBC), Kachin Youth Leader of Nanmati Town, and human rights advocate. The Kachin Human Rights Watch (KHRW) released a statement expressing their profound sorrow over the passing of Mr. Hkun Jaw Li.


It has come to our attention that U Hkun Jaw Li, a former youth leader of the Kachin Baptist Church (KBC), was tragically killed in his residence. Three unidentified individuals arrived on a motorcycle and fatally shot him multiple times with a firearm.


The deceased cleric was 45 years of age and the father of five children. The cause of his assassination and the identity of the armed group responsible remain unknown, according to local sources.


U Hkun Jaw Li is a former cleric at the Nanmati Kachin Baptist Church. He is also actively involved in community-based anti-drug initiatives and various community service activities.
