In the aftermath of the coup in Laiza, along the China border, which served as the headquarters of the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO), an educational institution has emerged as a symbol of resistance and hope – the Kachin State Comprehensive University. Established in collaboration with teachers aligned with the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM), this university stands as a testament to the resolve of the people amidst the political upheaval gripping Myanmar.
In an exclusive interview with a recent graduate of the university, a deeper insight into its operations and aspirations was revealed. Kachin State Comprehensive University (KSCU) has been established through a collaborative effort between the National Unity Government (NUG), university educators engaged in the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM), and the administration of the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) in the KIO-controlled territory of Laiza. It operates under the auspices of the KIO, with Lt. Gun Maw of KIO, serving as its chairman. While offering a curriculum akin to that of State Administration Council (SAC) universities, the distinguishing factor lies in its teaching methodologies, predominantly influenced by CDM educators and SAC professors who sought refuge following the coup.

Despite its dissociation from the SAC regime, comparisons with renowned international institutions remain premature, as highlighted by the graduate. However, the university's significance lies in its potential to represent the entirety of Kachin State, transcending affiliations with any specific political entity. Notably, the institution has witnessed a steady rise in student enrollment, including those transitioning from SAC-run universities, offering opportunities for students to complete their interrupted education.
With a blend of regular and distance education programs tailored to accommodate diverse student needs, the university has attracted individuals from various walks of life, including office workers and members of armed groups like the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and People's Defense Forces (PDF), as well as those from internally displaced persons (IDP) camps.
While acknowledging certain weaknesses, particularly in distance education, the university has made strides in strengthening its faculty and departments. The recent inauguration of a new campus building signifies a commitment to expansion and improvement. Notably, the psychology department stands out, boasting well-qualified professors and a robust academic environment.
The Kachin State Comprehensive University serves as a beacon of resilience amidst Myanmar’s turbulent political landscape. As it continues to evolve and grow, it not only provides educational opportunities but also embodies the aspirations of a populace striving for democracy and progress in the face of adversity.
